All in all, this is the most comprehensive port of Cave Story to date, making an already replayable game even more replayable. It would have been nice if they included online co-op as well, but it's not a big deal.

I haven't played the co-op mode, but it seems like it'd be a lot of fun if you can find a friend who likes Cave Story. There aren't any changes outside of that, but it's a cute addition if you really like Curly. Curly Story is, as the name suggests, the main game but with Curly and Quote's roles swapped. Wind Fortress is a short but challenging new set of levels that is well worth playing through if you enjoyed the base game. Of the seven game modes, I've only played Wind Fortress and Curly Story, which have also been included in some prior ports. The different soundtracks are all pretty interesting and I really appreciate the variety, although I've only played with three of them so far. Seeing the game finally fill up the entire screen is just awesome. One of the dogs has even been moved closer to Jenka's home from its location in the original game, so your trip to the Sand Zone will be considerably shorter in this port. As far as quality of life features go, the abilities to carry two jars of jelly and to take all five of Jenka's dogs with you at the same time have been added.

It plays exactly like the original game, so I'm not gonna go into detail on the gameplay or controls. Widescreen support, options for either original or upgraded graphics, five different versions of the soundtrack to choose from, local co-op multiplayer, seven additional game modes, and some quality of life changes make this edition of Cave Story the definitive one for fans. It's the original version created entirely by Pixel, so surely it's the most authentic way to experience the game, right? While I still believe newcomers should play the freeware release first, Nicalis's latest port for the Switch is definitely nothing to scoff at. I'm a pretty devout advocate of the freeware version of Cave Story.
